Speedy/Speedy Edit Commands submenu

This submenu lists the Speedy Edit commands and their keyboard shortcuts.

Add • Delete Note. Choose these commands to add or remove a pitch from the selected note.
Delete Entry. Choose this command to delete the entire chord, note or rest.
Show/Hide Entry. Choose this command to either show or hide the entire chord, note or rest.
Raise • Lower Half Step. Choose this command to raise or lower the selected pitch by a half step.
Raise • Lower Half Step (Entire Measure). Choose this command to raise or lower the selected pitch by a half step throughout the entire measure.
Show/Hide Accidental. Choose this command to force the accidental to either show or hide on the selected pitch.
Freeze/Unfreeze Accidental. Choose this command to force the accidental to either appear (freeze) or appear if needed (unfreeze).
Enharmonic. Choose this command to change the spelling of the selected note.
Enharmonic (Entire Measure). Choose this command to change the spelling of the selected note throughout the measure.
Add/Remove Accidental Parentheses. Choose this command to have the accidental on the selected note appear in parentheses.
Flip Stem Direction. Choose this command to reverse the current stem direction of the selected note.
Select the first note of a beamed group to change the direction of all stems in the beam group.
Set Stem Direction to Automatic. Choose this command to allow Finale to set the stem direction.
Break/Join Beam. Choose this command to either force the selected note to beam to the previous note or to break the beam between the two notes.
Flat Beam. Choose this command to force the selected beam to appear horizontally flat.
Select the first note of the beam group to flatten the beam.
Tie/Untie to Next Note • Prev Note. Choose this command to place a tie to the next note, or to the previous note (even across barlines).
Add Dot. Choose this command to place an augmentation dot on the current note.
Grace Note. Choose this command to change the selected note to a grace note, or to change the note from a grace note back to a normal size note.
Slash Grace Note. Choose this command to place a slash through the flag of the selected grace note.
You can globally set flagged grace notes to have slashes in Document Options - Grace Notes.
Combine/Split Rests. Choose this command to combine or split a rest with rests on the same beat in other layers. This command is only available when Consolidate Rests Across Layers is checked in Document Options - Layers. This command follows these rules:
- Combining rests: Finale only combines rests of equal duration occurring on the same beat. Rests are combined in this manner only if there are no sounding notes in any layer on that beat. When combined, the rest is displayed as the currently selected layer.
- Splitting rests: Finale creates individual rests in all layers that are being used in that measure. They are vertically positioned according to their default position.
- Rest positioning: If an individual rest has been repositioned, it cannot be combined with rests in other layers. Combined rests are centered vertically on the staff, but can be manually repositioned like any other rest; any repositioning affects all layers. In these contexts, positioning includes dragging horizontally and vertically in the Speedy Entry Frame, moving up and down with the arrow keys in Simple Entry, using the Note Position tool, and editing the Position field in the Speedy Entry Edit Frame dialog box.
- Rest size: If an individual rest has been resized with the Resize tool, it cannot be combined with rests in other layers. Resizing combined rests with the Resize tool affects all layers.
- Hiding rests: If any rests on a particular beat have been hidden, the rests on that beat cannot be combined. If a combined rest is hidden, the rest is hidden in all layers.
- Changing a rest to a note: If a combined rest is changed to a note (for example, with the Toggle Note/Rest command), the note appears only in the active layer. Rests in other layers that were part of the combined rest appear in those layers as normal (not combined) rests.
Freeze/Float Rest. Choose this command to force the rest to appear in the default position (centered in the staff lines) or to float according to layer settings.
