Flags

You have considerable control over the flags on single eighth notes (and smaller values) in Finale. The typical use for these parameters is to adapt a music font to Finale other than Finale’s Maestro font or Adobe’s Sonata font. Because different fonts use different spacing and positioning schemes for their music characters, you may need to adjust some of these variables in order to accommodate a different music font.

ClosedTo change the character assignment for a flag
  1. Choose Document > Document Options and select Flags. The Document Options - Flags dialog box appears.
  2. From the Flag Characters drop-down menu, choose the flag element whose character you want to change, then click Select. See the figure for reference. Maestro flag characters contain either one or two flags (as shown below).

    When you click Select, the Symbol Selection dialog box appears, containing every available character in the font. (To change the font, choose Document > Set Default Music Font, select a new font, and click OK.)

  3. Double-click the replacement character. Whichever character you select now appears at every occurrence of a flag in this document.
  4. Click OK.
ClosedTo use horizontal straight flags

These steps assume that you are using Maestro font for flag characters; see Document Options - Fonts dialog box.

  1. Choose Document > Document Options and select Flags. The Document Options - Flags dialog box appears.
  2. Under Flag Type, select Use Straight Flags.
  3. Click OK. The flags in your document change to horizontal straight flags.
ClosedTo use angled straight flags
  1. Choose Document > Document Options and select Fonts. The Document Options - Fonts dialog box appears.
  2. From the Notation drop-down menu, choose Flags.
  3. Click Set Font. The Font dialog box appears.
  4. From the Font list, choose Maestro Percussion and click OK. You return to the Document Options - Fonts dialog box.
  5. Click Apply. The flags are temporarily displayed with the incorrect character.
  6. On the left, select the Flags category. The Document Options - Flags dialog box appears.
  7. Under Flag Type, select Use Straight Flags.
  8. From the Flag Characters drop-down menu, choose Straight Upstem Flag and click Select. The Symbol Selection dialog box appears.
  9. Select slot 115 and click Select.
  10. From the Flag Characters drop-down menu, choose Straight Downstem Flag and click Select. The Symbol Selection dialog box appears.
  11. Select slot 83 and click Select.
  12. From the Flag Positioning drop-down menu, choose Straight Upstem Flag and set Vertical to 24 EVPUs.
  13. From the Flag Positioning drop-down menu, choose Straight Downstem Flag and set Vertical to -24 EVPUs.
  14. Click OK. The flags in your document change to angled straight flags.
